The stand-up quick-printing computer at the OPAC stations now has a copy of PowerPoint installed. Files opened in PowerPoint can be printed in any of the usual PowerPoint options: handouts, multiple slides per page, etc. (Note: as on 7/21/08, most files need to be saved first, then opened - files are often opening in the PowerPoint viewer instead of the full software, a problem that Horacio is working on.)
2. PowerPoint files can still not be printed as multiple-pages-per-sheet from the public workstations. Horacio is working on this, has confirmed what the problem is, & is pursuing ways to get around the problem. Any student wanting to print a PowerPoint file (.ppt) with multiple slides per sheet should be directed to use one of our laptops, which have the software on them. Once the converter is downloaded, and you install the converter (double-click on the downloaded file's desktop icon), the files open fine. I've asked that the converter be added to the laptops, so hopefully soon we'll have a better solution for this.
Other non-WORD Files
So, now, when a student comes in with a<i

Printing non-WORD files

gr added Printing non-WORD files

Good news for WordPerfect (and other?) users!

I did a bit of testing with a student today, & we've discovered that her .wps (WordPerfect) file could be opened by both the laptops (using WORD) and the student workstations (using the WORD viewer). Something must have changed, or maybe newer WordPerfect versions work differently - who knows.

So, now, when a student comes in with a non-WORD text tocument, have them give it a try. Don't forget, tho, in order to let WORD recognize the file, you need to change the settings on the Open menu to display All Files rather than just WORD documents.

If you come across a document type that fails, please try to save a copy for us (on the Ref Desk USB drive) for testing, and let me know.

Thanks!

Hi, everyone.
Students can also experience difficulties if they're trying to log on from the back of the library. This occurs with our laptops as well as their own. Sometimes, it's as simple as having them come forward to the Ref desk to log in.
